Abstract
RAYLEIGH'S method has been applied recently by us to examine the modes of vibration of beams and the relationships between the modes. One result of some interest is the interference with the fundamental modes of two types of oscillation which we have called ‘screw vibrations’. These vibrations, although simple in nature, are generally ignored, perhaps because they have a minimum frequency of excitation.
