Discrepancy between the Spectro-Isotopic and the Mass Spectrometric Results for the Natural Abundance Ratio of the Lithium Isotopes

Abstract

THE determination of the natural abundance ratio of the lithium isotopes lithium-6 and lithium-7 by spectroscopic measurement of the ratio of the line intensities of the isotopic components of the 6708 A. resonance line has given results not in agreement with the mass-spectrometric figure. A summary of the work in both fields up to 1951 has been given by Baldock and Patton1. In subsequent work on the spectro-isotopic assay, Stukenbroeker, Smith, Werner and McNally2 calibrated the optical determination by samples analysed mass-spectrometrically and showed that the method could yield a 2σ precision of slightly more than 1 per cent using photographic recording.
