Combined Action of Phytohaemagglutinin and RNA on Lymphocytes from Patients with Hodgkin's Disease

Abstract

IT is well known that patients with Hodgkin's disease may exhibit a gradually diminishing delayed hypersensitivity1. In vitro experiments have also revealed a diminished response by lymphocytes from such patients to the blastogenetic stimulus of phytohaemagglutinin (PHA)2–5, tuberculin and other antigens6. We have found that these phenomena are closely related. Diminished lymphocyte response to such a stimulus can be shown in vitro only with lymphocytes from skin-negative subjects, and when skin hypersensitivity remains unchanged the lymphocyte culture produces a normal percentage of blast cells7.
