Abstract
IT has been shown that most of macrophages in inflammatory exudates arise from rapidly proliferating precursors situated in the bone marrow, some of which may, during their circulatory and migratory phases, resemble small lymphocytes rather than monocytes1–3. My findings suggest that the peritoneal cavity may act as an extravascular “culture chamber” where lymphocytes transform to macrophages before their mobilization to distant inflammatory sites.
