Abstract
CALCAREOUS nannoplankton are minute algae which occur, together with other flagellates important for the food-chain, in present day oceans. Much more common in Tertiary and Cretaceous marine environments, they contributed high percentages of skeletal remains to the sediments of these periods, as shown by the “White Chalk” of the Upper Cretaceous in northern Europe and many deep sea samples of Tertiary age.
