Abstract
MUSCOVITE, KAl2 (Si3Al)O10 (OH)2, has cleavage properties which make it suitable for studying phenomena which occur on surfaces and interfaces. The excellent cleavage produces surfaces which will readhere with the same or nearly the same strength1–3, and which can be molecularly smooth over large areas4. Experimental results indicate that the attraction across the (001) cleavage is greatest in a vacuum and becomes less in air or various other media, and there is evidence that the rate of cleavage influences the strength of attraction5.
