Cloning human embryos

Human embryonic stem cells have at last been generated by a technique called somatic-cell nuclear transfer. Further research on such cells should provide insight into ways of improving the generation of stem cells by reprogramming.

  1. If this work never demonstrates anything else, it already demonstrates the utter bankruptcy of the much-heard assertion, "Life begins at conception". There is nothing in the SCNT protocol identifiable as "conception" in any sense that word is normally used, yet blastocysts developed. Whatever this protocol does or does not eventually contribute in the clinic, it will hopefully contribute something to the ongoing ethical debate surrounding the use of embryos.

    I do agree with Mummery and Roelen that the ethical, practical, and regulatory issues associated with obtaining of human oocytes remain.
