Effect of the cell density on the conditioning of the medium by irradiated cells. Irradiated cells (8 Gy) were seeded at densities 50 000 (50 k) and 200 000 (200 k) and the growth-promoting capacity of the CMX was tested at various times thereafter. Test cells were counted after 72 h in CMX. Cloning efficiencies were used to calculate the number of surviving cells as shown. The dashed line shows the number of cells (surviving and nonsurviving) that were present in the 200 k donor cultures.
