In 2013, Google launched Calico Life Sciences to develop drugs for the treatment of ageing and age-related diseases. It was an ambitious plan, prompting Time magazine to ask on its cover ‘Can Google solve death?’. 12 years on, death is of course still inevitable. But Calico, working since 2014 in collaboration with AbbVie, has advanced 5 candidates into the clinic, built up a pipeline of around 20 preclinical candidates, and published hundreds of research papers.
