Heatwaves afflict even the far north’s icy seas

Arctic waters have notched a growing number of extreme events called marine heatwaves, raising fears for the region’s more heat-sensitive sea creatures.

Ocean ‘heatwaves’ are becoming increasingly common even in the frigid Arctic, where these events are more extreme, and possibly more damaging, than those in warmer seas farther south1.
