Rebecca Charbonneau recounts some of the sexism that has afflicted humanity’s attempts to communicate with life elsewhere (R. Charbonneau Nature 635, 279–281; 2024). She mentions in passing that the first radio message transmitted 50 years ago from the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico listed our species’s height as 1.75 metres — the height of the average US man at the time.
