Alternatives to animal research are not inherently more ethical

Two Comment articles on reforms to animal research rightly call for compassion and innovation (T. J. Herron et al. Nature 646, 799–801 (2025); K. C. K. Lloyd Nature 646, 802–803; 2025). But ending animal studies is premature, and other options, known as new approach methodologies or novel alternative methods (NAMs), are not morally pure.
