Plans by the administration of US President Donald Trump to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) are progressing rapidly (see Nature https://doi.org/qsk2; 2025). The US National Science Foundation has sought proposals for privatizing NCAR’s Mesa Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado, and announced the transfer of its supercomputing centre in Cheyenne, Wyoming, to an as-yet-unnamed third party.
