Schematic for tissue slice acquisition and culture. Cores 8-mm in diameter were taken from radical prostatectomy specimens (a, b) and placed in the Krumdieck tissue slicer (c) from which slices emerged in a sequential manner (d). Slices were placed on titanium mesh inserts in six-well plates with 2.5 ml culture medium (e). Plates were mounted on an angled rotating platform in a tissue culture incubator (f). The angled rotation caused intermittent submersion of the tissue slices, facilitating diffusion of gas and nutrients from all sides of the slices (g).
