Blue dye used to selectively label bladder tumours in rats

Failure to identify all of the superficial lesions present in patients undergoing transurethral resection is a common problem, which can lead to bladder cancer recurrence. Now, data from rat models of bladder cancer reveal that Evans Blue, a water-soluble blue dye, is selectively taken up by bladder tumours.

Explaining the ratonale for this research, lead author Peter de Witte explains “We have previously shown in a clinical setting that hypericin has high sensitivity and specificity for detection of bladder transitional cell carcinoma, papillary and flat carcinoma in situ.” On the choice of Evans Blue, de Witte adds “an in vitro methodology was used to screen for intensely coloured compounds with similar properties to hypericin.” Ultimately, the authors aim to use Evans Blue to enhance the sensitivity of white-light cystoscopy, which remains the gold-standard procedure for visualization of suspicious lesions during transurethral resection.
