Abstract
Arylidene polymers containing oxadiazole and triazole moieties in their main chains have been prepared from the corresponding polyhydrazide I. Bulk polymerization in the absence of solvent was conducted for the synthesis of 1,3,4-oxadiazole II in quantitative yield. Treatment of I with different amines and using bulk or solution polymerization methods afforded 1,2,4-triazole. The resulting polymers were characterized by elemental and spectral analyses, solubility, and viscometry. The thermal properties of the polymers were evaluated by TGA measurements and correlated to structure. The crystallinity of polymers was examined by X-ray analysis. The UV visible spectra of certain polymers were measured in DMSO solution and showed characteristic absorption bands at 335–380 nm due to n-π* transition. The photosensitizing properties of the prepared polymers were detected by fluorescence spectrometry.
