Abstract
Direct polycondensation of equimolar quantities of a dicarboxylic acid and a diol, which does not generate any undesirable wastes, is an ideal method for producing aliphatic polyesters, the demand for which is set to increase considerably as a result of their biocompatibility. There is a need for an effective system for producing aliphatic polyesters under mild conditions with short reaction times. We report a rapid, environmentally benign, solvent-free method for synthesis of aliphatic polyesters by direct polycondensation of equimolar quantities of a dicarboxylic acid and a diol through microwave irradiation in the presence of tin (II) chloride as a catalyst.
