Abstract
Seven children with familial symptomatic vesico-ureteral reflux (VUR) were found in 4 families: 2 first cousins in 2 of them, 2 sisters in another one and a girl in the last one, whose mother and grand-mother had VUR lesions from chronic pyelonephritis with renal scarring (CP) and hypertension. The presence of VUR in three consecutive generations has not been previously reported in our knowledge. The familial cases are the 12.9 % of the total of children with VUR.
Family VUR is likely to be present in another family, for it was found in one girl and presumed to be in the past in her sister. This suspect is based on the CP lesions and urinary tract infection but with normal cystography. All patients but one are females.
Urinary tract infection (UTI) was the main symptom in all cases, and oriented to perform cystogram. Autosomal dominant inheritance influenced by sex, is tentatively proposed.
The relatives of a refluxer child is a population with a high risk of having this trait. Individuals from this population with UTI, cystogram must be performed. The genetic knowledge of VUR supplies useful information for the prophylaxis and early treatment of CP.
