Objective: This paper investigates the association between maternally reported adolescent behavior problems and emotional, social and health risk behaviors as reported by the adolescents themselves.

Methods: Utilizing data from the 1992 Supplement to the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, maternal reports of extreme behavior problems were compared with adolescents' self-reported emotional distress, and antisocial and health risk behaviors. The study was limited to the mothers with children ages 10 to 17 yrs, including 1, 149 mothers (mean age 31.9±2.1 yrs) and 1,619 adolescents (12.7±2.0 yrs) Scores in the 90th%ile on the well-utilized Behavior Problem Index (BPI), as compared to nationally standardized, gender-specific scores, were considered extreme.
