Studies have reported that distal radius BMC measured by single photon absorptiometry was decreased in IDMs at birth. The purpose of this study was to evaluate longitudinally the wbBMC in IDMs using dual X-ray absorptiometry(DXA).

Material and methods: 18 IDMs (Mean GA ± SD = 36.9± 1.9 weeks, mean BW ± SD = 3814 ± 724 g) were studied. They were divided into 4 groups according to the type of the mother's diabetes mellitus (White's classification) (Groups A (n=7), B (n=2), C (n=7) and D(n=2)). During the study, all infants received 1000 IU per day of Vitamin D. WbBMC was assessed by DXA (Hologic QDR 1000W, Pediatric software 5.47) at birth and at 6 months of age. Serum calcium indices were measured at the same time.
