We examined the neuronal distribution of tubulin epitopes in neocortical specimens from autopsy brains of children with HIV-1-associated CNS disease.

We studied formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded sections of frontal and parietal neocortex from six pediatric HIV-1-infected patients without underlying CNS opportunistic infections, and from six age-matched controls who died of other causes. Sections were stained with an affinity purified polyclonal antiserum against the class III β-tubulin isotype (β III), and three monoclonal antibodies against β III, glutamylatedβ-III and acetylated α-tubulin by the avidin-biotin complex technique.
