Neonates are perceived to be a health group who are vulnerable, and hence at increased risk of serious illness. Parents, especially first time parents, are often anxious about health issues in their newborns. In view of these concerns, we undertook a study to determine the profile of neonates presenting to a Pediatric Emergency Department (PED).

Methods: A retrospective chart review of all neonates < 8 days of age presenting to PED was done from June 1990 to May 1995. Data collected from each chart included sex, date of birth, date of discharge, age at presentation, presenting complaint, discharge/admitting diagnosis, and demographic data. Statistical analysis was done using chi-square tests for contingency tables and chi-square tests.
