Objective: To determine the difference in reported and observed behavior regarding parents' and childrens' use of Child Restraint Devices(CRD's) and safety belts in a children's hospital outpatient population.

Design: A lay volunteer randomly selected families for an interview. The volunteer administered a verbal formal survey regarding: the place the child sits in the car, seat belt use by the children and adults, and CRD use and its positioning. The respondents were selected at random in sequential manner as they approached the parking cashier desk. The respondents were then observed, without their knowledge, leaving the hospital deck. The reported behaviors and actual behaviors were compared.
