Is the Use of Alcohol and Marijuana by Adolescents Associated with 1) Their Approval Peers' Use of Alcohol and Marijuana or 2) Their Perceptions of Adult Approval of These Substances?

Objective: Based on Problem-Behavior theory, this study examined whether adolescents' frequency of use of alcohol and marijuana were associated with their perceptions of neighborhood adults' approval or disapproval of adolescents using each of these substances and the adolescents' level of approval of youth their own age using these substances. We also examined the relationships between the frequency of use of each substance and parental educational levels, family composition, and plans after high school.
