INTRODUCTION: Few data is available on surfactant pool size in human infants with and without RDS. We used the stable isotope labeled dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (¹³C-DPPC) as a tracer to study pulmonary surfactant pool size in preterm infants with RDS and in term infants with no lung disease.
