Azacytidine (5-AZA-CR) and decitabine (5-AZA-dCR) are modified in a 3-step phosphorylation process by different metabolic pathways. 5-AZA-CTP/5-AZA-dCTP is incorporated into RNA or DNA by RNA/DNA polymerases, respectively.
