A Nitrification (white bars) and denitrification (black bars) in photogranules incubated with 1 mM 15N-labelled ammonium, either in the dark or the light, and with or without the addition of 3 mM acetate. Rates are a linear fit of the production of nitrate and nitrite or 15N–N2 in 4 separate vials stopped at different points. Nitrification represents rate of production of extracellular nitrate and nitrite plus the production of 15N–N2. Denitrification denotes the production of 15N-N2.
