Protecting dental nurses in the firing line

Picture the scene. The dental nurse hands you a dispensing gun loaded with impression material and, as you are squeezing it around the crown preparation you have just completed, the mixing tip at the end of the cartridge flies off and, still under pressure, the unmixed impression material explodes across the patients face, hair and clothes.

You continue to take the impression you started but all around there are dollops of green and white silicone in the patient's hair and on her very smart and worryingly new looking designer jacket. In the silence that descends and you wait for the impression to finish setting, there is a moment to contemplate what her reaction is going to be. And what yours will be as you glare over your loupes at the dental nurse who is now looking somewhat sheepish.
