At the BDA we receive many calls and emails from associates seeking advice when their practice owner wants to make changes to their associateship. The changes can relate to various terms and working conditions, such as UDA rates, licence fee and working hours. The proposed amendments to the associateship can sometimes have a drastic impact on the associate's income and influence whether their position remains tenable.
Associates should receive sufficient notice to consider the new terms of the associateship. I would advise associates to look at their current associate agreement, specifically the notice provisions. The notice period stated in the agreement is likely to be three months. The practice owner will not be able to implement the new terms, until the notice period has been exhausted without the associate's consent.
