Integrated Care Systems - a golden fleece or a real opportunity for change?

There is no need to remind anyone that the one constant in the NHS is change, and Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) sit at the heart of the Government's latest change programme for the health service. ICSs were enshrined in the Health and Care Act 2022, the most significant reform of the NHS since the last radical shake-up of the system by the Health and Social Care Act in 2012. The idea behind the latest reforms is to put-back together parts of the NHS that were broken apart ten years before.

The concept is a sound one - to improve the ability for different parts of the healthcare system to work together for the benefit of patients, improving outcomes and managing resources more efficiently for the local population. But will it work?
