In November 2025, the Oral Health Summit promises to bring a fresh perspective to teamwork and innovation in dentistry. In this interview, Rhiannon Jones shares insights into this groundbreaking event and its significance for the profession.

The Oral Health Summit is an exciting collaboration between the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy (BSDHT) and the British Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry (BSP), set to redefine the way dental professionals connect and grow. What inspired this initiative, and how does it embody the shared values of these two organisations?
Rhiannon: The idea for the Summit came about during conversations between Professor Nicola West, President of the BSP, and myself. As Presidents of our respective organisations, we realised we had a unique opportunity to unite our values and goals. We both share a commitment to promoting health, preventing disease and supporting the profession, and this event is the perfect embodiment of those principles.
Traditionally, our conferences have been held separately, but we recognised the potential to achieve more together. By combining our efforts, we're bridging gaps in education and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, which ultimately benefits patients and professionals alike.
What are the key goals of the Summit, and how will it benefit the wider oral healthcare team?
Our primary goal is to deliver high-quality education tailored to the diverse needs of dental professionals. While there's a focus on periodontal care, the Summit is not exclusively perio-based. We've worked hard to ensure the content is meaningful for everyone, from dental hygienists and dental therapists to general dentists and specialists.
Key themes include the latest advances in periodontal care, restorative techniques and innovations in patient management. Renowned speakers will provide evidence-based insights with practical applications, empowering attendees to enhance their practice and patient care.
What can attendees expect in terms of format and opportunities?
The programme offers a dynamic mix of plenary sessions, breakout streams and hands-on workshops. Plenary sessions will feature leading voices in dentistry, sharing expertise on critical issues and innovative approaches shaping the future of patient care. Breakout streams allow participants to focus on specific areas of interest, whether lecture-based learning or practical workshops. The workshops are a major highlight, offering opportunities to trial cutting-edge tools and techniques in an interactive setting.
Combined with one of the largest trade exhibitions of the year, attendees can engage directly with suppliers, explore the latest innovations, and gain confidence in adopting new approaches.
How will the Summit address shared challenges in the profession?
By bringing together dental hygienists, dental therapists, periodontists, and general practitioners, the Summit promotes a collaborative approach to tackling challenges. Through open discussions, attendees will explore solutions to shared obstacles and leave with actionable strategies to apply in their practices.
The event also highlights the importance of interdisciplinary learning. We're all working towards the same goal - enhanced patient care - and the Summit is a space where we can share expertise and grow together as a profession.
Why was Edinburgh chosen as the venue?
Edinburgh is the perfect location for our inaugural event. The International Conference Centre is modern and centrally located, with excellent transport links. The city itself is vibrant and inspiring, offering plenty for attendees to explore during their visit. It's a destination that adds to the overall experience of the Summit.
What would you like to say to the oral healthcare team as they prepare to attend?
This is an event not to be missed. It's a unique opportunity to learn, collaborate and shape the future of dental care. Whether you're looking to gain practical skills, explore the latest innovations or connect with peers, the Summit has something for everyone.
I'd also encourage everyone to plan ahead. Edinburgh is a popular destination, so book your accommodation early to avoid disappointment. And most importantly, come ready to engage, learn, and be inspired. This is your chance to be part of something transformative for our profession.
