If I ask my two primary school aged children what they want for dinner, they often bleat ‘A SELECTION, A SELECTION'. Also, I believe, known as ‘picky bits', ‘finger food' or maybe just ‘a buffet', this means they each want a curated selection of their favourite cold food items artfully arranged on a plate, crusts removed, fruit peeled and sliced (soggy/bruised bits removed), perhaps served with a variety of different sized ramekins to segregate the damp from the dry, and of course entirely different to their sibling's selection. Hashtag spoilt, you may say, and this is true, but at least there is no cooking required (unless you count the toaster); it includes fruit and cucumber slices (maybe even some sliced peppers); they're guaranteed to eat everything; and their chosen eating area remains fairly clean - give or take a few crumbs.
I paint this picture of humdrum domestic life because it leads me to the word ‘smorgasbord', which also can refer to a wide range of food served as hors d'oeuvres or a buffet, or a wide range or variety of something. I tend to see each issue of BDJ Team as a smorgasbord - or selection - of content relevant to our readers and their lives and careers. This month, we dabble in careers, with business leader (and cover star) Patrycja Galonzka recounting how she has risen through the ranks to her current role, and dental nurse Jane Johnson praising her small but fantastic team; we touch on highly topical AI in ‘Bringing AI down to earth'; Australia based correspondent Rochelle looks at the ‘boomerang effect' in dentistry; authors provide a guide to providing smoking cessation advice; the DDU and BSDHT present their regular insights; and orthodontic therapist Chrystal places impacted canines under the microscope (with some fascinating pictures).
Of course, although eight issues of BDJ Team adhere to this pick and mix pattern of content, I am pleased to announce that the next two issues will have specific themes: July is all about oral health education and promotion, and September is all about the Oral Health Summit 2025. I expect each of these issues to be more of a tasting menu, if you will, or perhaps a banquet, of delightful content. Watch this space.
