Origins of osteoclasts in physiological condition and pathological inflammatory bone resorption. In physiological conditions in adults, osteoclasts (OCs) involved in bone remodeling are derived from monocyte precursor cells. In pathological inflammatory bone resorption, OCs can also be derived from other precursors, which are classical or intermediate monocytes, inflammatory dendritic cells, or AtoMs. Major markers for these OCs are presented
