The recent British Dental Association (BDA) webinar on ‘Demystifying Drug Therapy in Periodontics' brought together dentists and dental hygienists from across the UK and around the world for a focused and practical exploration of how pharmaceuticals fit into contemporary periodontal care.

The session delivered a clear and evidence-based framework for understanding when, why and how drug therapy should be used alongside mechanical treatment. Engagement throughout the event was strong, with delegates asking thoughtful questions and sharing clinical challenges they encounter in daily practice.
The webinar centred around the BDA's learning objectives for the session, which aimed to cut through common misconceptions and give clinicians the confidence to make well informed decisions about drug use. The core aims included understanding the overall goals of drug therapy in periodontal diseases, reviewing the mechanisms and recommended use of various pharmacological agents, and identifying the clinical scenarios where these medications may genuinely improve outcomes.
The importance of accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment planning was emphasised throughout.
One of the strongest messages from the session was understanding the goal of pharmacological inventions, whilst analysing the strengths and weaknesses of particular drugs and scenarios for which they might be needed.
The webinar broke down the situations where systemic antibiotics may be indicated, such as in cases of aggressive or unresponsive periodontitis, or as part of a carefully considered plan.
Real world case examples helped ground the material, showing how drug therapy decisions must balance disease severity, patient risk factors and the broader goal of stabilising periodontal conditions over the long term.
The success of the webinar was in no small part due to the expertise and clarity brought by the speaker, Dr Simon Stern. Dr Stern is a highly regarded Specialist in Periodontics and Implant Dentistry, known for combining rigorous scientific understanding with a calm and practical teaching style that resonates with clinicians. After completing his specialist training at King's College London, he achieved Membership in Periodontics with Distinction from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He later founded The Perio Centre on Harley Street, where he provides specialist periodontal and implant care (https://periocentre.co.uk/meet-the-specialist/). His reputation extends internationally, with invitations to lecture globally and publications in respected clinical journals. Dr Stern has also received multiple awards recognising his contribution to periodontology and education.
Throughout the webinar, attendees appreciated his ability to translate complex pharmacological concepts into meaningful guidance. His explanations were accessible without sacrificing scientific depth, making the content valuable for clinicians at all levels of experience.
Overall, the webinar was a great success, delivering a highly informative and engaging evening that left clinicians feeling better equipped to make confident drug therapy decisions in periodontal care. Dr Simon Stern's expertise and thoughtful presentation style were key factors in the overwhelmingly positive response from attendees.
As clinicians reflect on the content and incorporate the learning into their everyday practice, many will also appreciate knowing they can refer patients to The Perio Centre for specialist support when necessary.
Future collaborations and educational events will continue to strengthen periodontal practice across the UK and beyond.
