Putative model of the mechanisms underlying increased mitochondrial fission in PE. Elevated ceramide in mitochondria from PE pregnancies activates DRP1 and increases its recruitment to MFF at the OMM. p-DRP1 oligomerizes and completes the process of mitochondrial fission. Ceramide triggers the recruitment of BOK to the OMM, which; in turn, contributes to both augmented p-DRP1 expression and increases MAM tethering by inducing MFN2 expression. Mitochondrial fragments are degraded by means of PINK1/Parkin dependent mitophagy
