In a variety of diseases with aberrant tissue remodeling, ADAM and ADAMTS proteins play protective or pathologic roles by influencing biological behaviors (proliferation, migration and apoptosis) of mesenchymal cells or immune cells and reconstruction of extracellular matrix. These effects may be mediated by activation/inhibition of cellular signaling pathways and catalytic degradation of extracellular matrix.
