The Diabetic Retinopathy Vitrectomy Study was undertaken in patients with diabetes mellitus with recent-onset severe vitreous haemorrhage (vision 5/200 or less) for at least one month. Early vitrectomy was performed within days of randomization in the “early vitrectomy” group, and delayed for over a year in the “deferred vitrectomy” group. The latter group also included eyes in which the vitreous haemorrhage had resolved at 1-year, or in which clinical deterioration meant that vitrectomy surgery was no longer indicated.
