The number in the parenthesis indicates the number of lines assessed for mtDNA copy number, except for the ancestral N2 control where it indicates the number of biological replicates for the same strain. Two technical replicates were assessed for each ancestral strain, biological replicate or evolved population except for the ancestral N2 control where the number of technical replicates ranged from five to 17.
