Abiotic stress was applied at early stages of development of the male gametophyte. Flower buds ≥10 mm in length were removed from WTptGFP plants prior to plant transfer to controlled environment chambers for stress application. White arrowheads indicate the developmental window of the flower buds at the time of plant transfer to the stressful condition. Pollen development in these buds (<10 mm long) largely occurs under stress. Scale bar, 10 mm.
