Primer-extension experiments using a primer specific to each fla gene (Supplementary Table 2) revealed TIS and the promoters of flaA (c), flaB (d), flaC (e), and flaD (f). Lane C, T, A, and G represent the nucleotide sequencing ladders of the upstream region for each gene. An arrow denotes the cDNA band indicating TIS. TIS (designated with +1) and its promoter (underlined and aligned with the consensus sequences for RpoN or RpoF68,69) were indicated in nucleotide sequences upstream of the initiation codon (ATG) of each gene.
