Ionic current density maps recorded above an AA2024 during immersion in 1 mM MBI + 10 mM NaCl at selected exposure times: a 1 min and b 24 h. The inhibitor solution was then replaced with 10 mM NaCl, and the maps were taken after c 1 min and d 12 h immersion. Areas of positive and negative ionic current densities are given according to the colour scale bars from red to blue, respectively. Optical micrographs corresponding to the SVET images are given in Supplementary Fig. 1.
