STN-DBS was able to increase the mitophagy in dopaminergic neurons via an mTOR-dependent pathway, and the oxidative stress was suppressed due to removal of damaged mitochondria. As a consequence, the apoptogenic factors released from mitochondria were reduced, which was finally attributed to the dopaminergic neuroprotection of STN-DBS in the SN of PD.
