At each step, indicated by the coloured squares, various steps described in the formulation are illustrated. Triangles indicate secreted metabolites from each of the microbiomes (objective, such as SCFA production). The minimisation is done in steps C and D, employing constraints based on the growth and production rates obtained from steps A and B.
