1:2 mixtures of 51, 133 and 416 pL aqueous droplets containing the standard formose reagents (1 M formaldehyde [C1], 0.02 M CaCl2 and 1M TMG) and, additionally, either 0.2 M glycolaldehyde (0.2 M C2) or no C2 (no C2) were incubated in a 2D droplet array for 1 h at 40 °C. The growth rate of 0.2 M C2 droplets is plotted against initial volume for droplets with different initial numbers of no-C2 neighbouring droplets (1 to 5). Data are presented as mean values ±1 s.d.
