a, Overlap of the probability distributions of random realisations (N=5000) with respect to their categorization splits (number of synchronous vs. asynchronous years) varying from just under 40% to well over 90% until the early 2000s. The overlap is expressed as fraction and number of members. An example of the distributions of the four categories for two specific periods is shown in Extended Data Fig. 6. b, Fraction and number of random realisations exceeding the number of asynchronous years in 2011. Similar to Fig. 4 the graph illustrates that phases of asynchronous behaviour have existed in the past, however, the portion of asynchronous members exceeding the value of 2011 (11.3 yr) remains below 5%.
