The black curve denotes no fractionation. Below (above) this curve the mantle is lighter (heavier) than the unfractionated mantle. The buoyancy number is calculated assuming a thermal expansivity of 1Ă—10−5 K−1 and the temperature difference between the CMB and surface of 3000 K.
