In the version of this article initially published, there was an error in the lower cluster shown in Fig. 1b, where the label now reading “spoVE” appeared initially as “ftsW,” while in the “Gene order” column of Fig. 2, colored squares now appearing above grey backgrounds were initially missing. In the color key of Fig. 3, the fourth label now reading “ftsl/spoVD” appeared initially as “ftsl,” and the ninth label now reading “ftsw/spoVE” appeared initially as “ftsw.” In the third paragraph of the Introduction, “FtsW” has been removed from the second sentence now reading “In both organisms, the dcw cluster includes the genes encoding MraZ and MraW, which are transcriptional regulators, and the genes encoding MurE, MurD, MurG, MraY, FtsI, FtsQ, FtsL, FtsA and FtsZ”.
