a, Definition of the rates for the model of a microbial lineage being taken up by, replicating within and being expulsed from worms on a plate. b, Distribution of the optimal strategies across the whole traits space. c, Projection of the trait space over the axes (r, δ). For each point of the map, the color represents the proportions of times each of the 4 possible strategies are optimal, integrating over the values of f and K. The color scheme uses the CMYK color code: a purely cyan (respectively magenta, yellow) pixel indicates that the only optimal strategy for the considered values (r, δ) is ↓ δ (respectively ↑ f, ↑K). A color of a darker shade indicates that ↑ r is also optimal in a small proportion at that point, as shown on the additional color scales for each edge.
