In search of missing T cells

T cell lymphopenia is characteristic of glioblastoma, but a new study in Nature Medicine has revealed that these ‘missing’ T cells sequester in the bone marrow. T cell sequestration has not been studied extensively and further understanding of this mode of T cell dysfunction might improve immunotherapeutic strategies.

The low numbers of naïve T cells in particular led the authors to believe that cell production might be reduced. To test this idea, they examined the bone marrow of glioma-bearing mice. However, their investigations revealed high T cell numbers in the bone marrow. This unexpected finding was echoed in patients with glioblastoma.
