Regulatory T cells protect the heart in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

Immune cells contribute to pathological remodelling in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) but regulatory T (Treg) cells in particular can attenuate cardiac fibrosis and systolic dysfunction through their immunosuppressive properties, according to a study published in Science Translational Medicine.

First, Wang, Watkins and colleagues analysed postmortem or explanted heart samples from patients with HCM and found that HCM hearts showed chronic leukocyte infiltration and immune cell activation compared with heart tissue from individuals without cardiac disease. Gene set enrichment analysis showed that active immune responses were present from mid-stage to late-stage HCM, which indicates a persistent inflammatory response. Similar RNA signatures were observed in four different mouse models of HCM.
